Curly Hair Dos and Don'ts
It’s no secret that the girl with the curly hair gets all the attention when she walks into a room. Think Julia Roberts, Halle Berry, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kerry Washington. While everyone loves the curls, embracing your own curls can sometimes be challenging. Curly hair can be unpredictable — you never know what you will end up with after a wash. At times, it can be unruly, dry, and frizzy. But with the right care and the right products, you’ll learn to love it too and enjoy all the attention that comes with it.
3 Dos for Curly Hair
Hydrate with an Oil Mask
To prevent curly hair from becoming dry and frizzy, it’s important to keep it hydrated and moisturized. Once or twice a week, apply an oil hair mask and leave it in for at least 2 hours (the longer the better) before rinsing out.
Use a Heat Protectant
Curly hair is very susceptible to drying out, whether from styling tools or from the sun. When your hair is wet, apply a generous amount of a natural thermal protectant. The product will coat your hair with a protective layer to prevent it from moisture loss when exposed to heat. When your hair is dry, apply an oil serum to help lock in the moisture and prevent frizz.
Comb and Detangle in the Shower
Use the time in the shower wisely and comb and detangle your hair with your fingers or with a wide toothed comb after applying conditioner. The conditioner will make it super easy to get those tangles out without pulling and damaging the hair.
3 Don’ts for Curly Hair
Brush Hair When It’s Dry
When and how to brush your hair depends a lot on the type of curls that you have. But one rule of thumb for all curls is to never, ever brush them while they’re dry. This will cause breakage, split ends and a lot of unwanted frizz. In fact, it’s best not to touch your hair at all when it’s dry!
Wash Daily
Because curly hair tends to be dry, it’s important to avoid washing it daily. We recommend washing it twice a week at the most. If you feel like you really need a rinse in between washes, skip the shampoo and use a lightweight conditioner to avoid stripping your hair of its natural oils. After washing, rehydrate with a nourishing hair oil.
Use Harsh Fabrics to Dry Hair
Avoid terry cloth towels and other harsh fabrics when drying your hair. They can ruffle the hair cuticle and absorb too much hair moisture, causing your hair to dry out and become frizzy. Choose soft fabrics like microfiber that help keep the moisture in, and treat your hair gently giving it ample time to air dry on its own.
With these tips, we hope you can embrace your curls, let them dry naturally and remember that the key to beautiful, bouncy and well-defined curls is moisture (lots of it), hydration and damage prevention.
