Fall and Winter Skin Care Routine: 5 Tips to Combat Dry Skin
Have you noticed that your skin is getting drier or is becoming flaky in some parts? If so, then your skin is trying to alert you that the dry season is coming. The sometimes drastic shifts in weather conditions can take a toll on your skin and it happens very quickly that your skin has a hard time keeping up.
To help maintain your best look as you go through weather changes, it’s important to adjust your skin care routine to incorporate the ingredients your skin craves and avoid those that can irritate or dry the skin even more.
5 Tips to Combat Dry Skin
Use a Gentle Cleanser
Did you know that your cleanser should change as the seasons change? In the summer, our skin requires a clarifying cleanser to keep our pores from getting clogged with sweat and dirt. In the Fall and Winter, our skin needs a more gentle cleanser to clean the pores without stripping the skin from its natural moisture. Try an oil cleanser to keep your skin moisturized and nourished.
Avoid Alcohol Toners
Alcohol is very drying to the skin, but you’ll find it in many toners and skin care products. Look for gentle non-drying ingredients like rose water, and add a few drops of essential oils to it to enhance its moisturizing effects. Frankincense, Neroli and Lavender are all great choices.
Use a Thick Moisturizer
During the summer, we prefer to use lightweight moisturizers and oils in order to keep our skin clear and our pores clean. As we transition to cooler days however, our skin craves more moisture and hydration and is ready to absorb thicker oils and creams to protect it from drying and flaking.
Hydrate and Clarify with a Facial Mask
Facial masks are so beneficial for the skin’s texture and appearance and are also such a treat for our well being. There’s something about taking the time to care for our skin that elevates our mood and our spirit. But the real benefit is the skin nourishment, hydration and protection that we get from the ingredients in masks. Try a weekly mask to keep your skin looking its best.
Drink Water
Water keeps our bodies hydrated and also helps to maintain our skin's elasticity, which is key during the drier months. In addition, drinking enough water helps to reduce puffiness and swelling, which occur when our skin retains water to protect us from dehydration. Stay hydrated to keep your skin happy.
