7 Health Benefits of Copaiba Essential Oil
Copaiba essential oil is derived from the resin of the copaiba tree, which is native to South and Central America, and has been used for centuries for its health and beauty benefits. It has a spicy and woody aroma, similar to black pepper, and can be ingested, diffused or applied topically.
Contrary to popular belief, Copaiba is not a cannabinoid, like CBD. Although it does contain some cannabinoid-like terpenes such as beta-caryophyllene, it does not contain CBD. Because of its healing, therapeutic and soothing properties, it deserves a lot more attention than it receives and should be a staple in your essential oil collection.
Health Benefits and Uses of Copaiba Oil
Clears Skin and Reduces Acne
Add a few drops of Copaiba oil to your favorite moisturizer or to a carrier oil then apply directly to your skin to help clarify the skin and reduce the appearance of acne and blemishes.
Reduces Inflammation
Beta-caryophyllene , a major constituent of copaiba oil, has been shown to reduce inflammation and oxidative stress. Dilute a few drops in a carrier oil and massage onto your skin to help reduce swelling and redness. It can also help with skin conditions like Rosacea and Eczema.
Provides Pain Relief
In addition to its anti-inflammatory benefits, Copaiba oil helps to alleviate sore muscles and joints, making it an excellent additive to massage oils. Add a few drops to your favorite oil and massage onto your skin to reduce pain and ease muscle tension.
Lowers Blood Pressure
Along with the topical benefits, Copaiba is one of the few essential oils that can be ingested (with caution). Because of its soothing properties, it has been shown to lower blood pressure and help support the health of the cardiovascular system. Simply add 1 to 2 drops to a glass of water or a cup of tea.
Heals Infections
Copaiba oil has strong anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties, making it a great choice for helping to treat infections and inhibiting bacterial growth. Apply topically, diluted in a carrier oil, to help prevent infections and quickly heal the skin. You can also add a drop to your toothpaste to help prevent oral infections and to promote healthy teeth and gums.
Kickstarts the Immune System
A drop a day can keep the doctor away. When taken internally, Copaiba can act as a powerful antioxidant to support healthy immune, nervous and digestive systems. Simply add a drop to a glass of water or juice, or alternatively, dilute a few drops in a carrier oil and apply to the back of your neck and chest.
Boosts the Mood
Copaiba is often used in aromatherapy to improve the mood and lighten the spirits. Add a few drops to a diffuser to reduce anxiety and stress, boost joy and calm the mind.
Safety Precautions
While Copaiba oil is a generally safe oil for ingestion and topical application, any essential oil can have undesired side effects if handled or used improperly. So before using a new oil, it’s important to know all the risks and take necessary safety precautions.
Essential oils are extremely concentrated and should be diluted properly in a carrier oil before application to the skin. 3-5 drops of essential oil per ounce of carrier oil is recommended.
Although it’s generally safe to digest, limit your intake to 1 or 2 drops diluted in an 8 oz glass of water, juice or tea. Ingesting large doses of Copaiba essential oil can cause an upset stomach, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
Pregnant or nursing women and people who have serious health conditions should consult their doctor before using Copaiba essential oil.
When applying topically, avoid contact with the eyes, inner ears and sensitive areas. We always recommend a patch test before applying to a larger area, as skin sensitivities can occur with any new product.
